On a recent walk I was attracted to this felled tree
Looking is the first stage of seeing. I look around to see the detail.
I noticed (looking) the roughness of the surface of the tree trunk then saw (seeing) a regular repeating pattern of texture.
I wanted to portray a feeling of isolation, show the detail of the surface and the ethereal beauty of the subject. I did not want to complicate the photograph with a background (it should support the subject) as it might challenge the unity and coherence.
The ‘black hole’ was perfect.
